Modern and Edgy Cake Cutting Vibes

16 Cake Cutting Song Suggestions For You

I originally wrote this for Indiana Wedding Pros in 2022. But I must say a new song has the #1 spot that I share with couples, along with an addition of a  few newer songs to the list, here is a fresh look in 2026.

Everyone wants their wedding to be unique and special and rightfully so. However, while planning with couples, I often get asked this question in regards to the cake cutting song: "What are some songs for cutting the cake that are not overplayed or crazy old." So, I am sharing with you my top 16 cake-cutting songs that I share with couples that are wanting to highlight this tradition.

If you love these vibes perhaps I might be the right DJ for you! Reach Out and Find Out!

1. Father John Misty - Real Love Baby

I am just obsessed with this song, it love the vibes, it has that feel as if you are listening to it on a record player, but is classy and catchy enough for a wedding. A lot of couples are wanting to move away from the "cliche" songs.

2. Maroon 5 – Sugar

From the moment that I first heard this song, I knew it was destined for cake-cutting greatness. The fact that Maroon 5 crashed weddings to make their music video for this, to me, only sealed this song's fate for an instant wedding staple. While it might be a little cliche at this point due to its overwhelming popularity. It still has great vibes and energy that just leaves you coming back for more.

3. Calvin Harris – Sweet Nothing

Calvin Harris captured my attention when I scanned the UK charts for new artists that might cross over the pond to the US. Well, Calvin Harris has not disappointed me yet. This song is more for the edgy couple who is not afraid to express themselves and gravitate toward a higher energy vibe with the EDM. This his great for those who want to have an edm set later in the night.

4. Michael Buble – How Sweet It Is

Michael Buble puts his unique twists to classics. This song is no exception; it has just enough extra pep in all the right places. This is the ultimate for those elegant classy vibes that your grandma will love, but also the romantic notes that vibes with your wedding party. Where you borrow those classic older vibes and replace it with modern swing.

5. Bebe Rexha – In The Name of Love

This song might be a surprise to some. You don't immediately think of Martin Garrix and Bebe as your first pick when you think of cake cutting. While I don't think this song is for everyone and cake cutting. I believe it is for my more edgy, fun couples who think beyond songs that mention sugar, cake, or sweet. This song pulls at the feels, with the right EDM notes and the lyrics to remind everyone why they are at your wedding in the first place... All in the name of love.

6. DNCE – Cake By The Ocean

As a DJ, this song initially saw lots of energy on the dance floor but is taking new life at weddings as a warmer and cake-cutting song. I encourage couples that want to dance the night away later in the evening to keep things lively and upbeat earlier on. This song is a perfect example of injecting fun energy earlier in the night to set the tone for an epic dance party later. Note Since Cake Cutting is earlier in the night. You will want to make sure Your DJ knows the original of this song is full of explicit lyrics. A clean family edit is most likely needed for most weddings.

7. Chain Smokers – Somethings Just Like This

Who doesn't want cake? I would want something just like this anyway. This is a modern song that your friends and family will instantly recognize. Is it upbeat enough for you?

8. Justin Bieber – Yummy

The Bieber fever may have left the building, but if you are a Bieber fan, this is a great way to show your teenage obsession with your guests. Even though Bieber has slipped out of the lime light and is focusing on his life. Justin continued to produce quality music every step of the way. The cake is Yummy.

9. Flo Rida – Sugar

Flo Rida has been a hitmaker packing dance floors with songs like low since the day the song dropped. Although this song could easily be played during the open dance, it is in my opinion that it has a lot of elements that make it perfect for your cake-cutting moment. Flo Rida has given the nod with his Eiffel 65 - Blue sample, which was released in 1998. The 90s are still extremely hot as throwbacks for the dance floor. So this song talking about sugar, high energy, modern, and a nod to the past will appeal to a wide breadth of guests. This cake-cutting song is for the couple that intends to get low later in the night with their friends and family.

10. Robin Thicke – The Sweetest Love

I encourage couples to consider this song if they are looking for a piece that is not overplayed at weddings. This song is probably one of the older songs on this list of suggestions. It truly is a deeper cut, that can show off your deeper love of music and a good time.  However, it still retains class and is gentle enough if you are not looking for a song that is too disruptive if cake-cutting is taking the lead before dinner.

11. Harry Styles – Sweet Creature

With this song, you have to be a fan of Harry Styles, but it is easy to be fan of his wit and endearing lyrics. This song is probably a little more outside the box from some of the other suggestions on this list. But, it might be fitting for you and yours!

12. Calvin Harris – This Is What You Came For

We all have that one friend who loves cake, so hopefully, they came for more than just that delicious tasty treat after dinner after all cake is just part of the celebration!  If you don't use this song, you might consider It for your last song of that night if you are wanting to end on a high energy note.  Or if you are having your DJ do a 30 minute edm set, might want to have them drop this in as a starter for that set.

13. Dua Lipa - Levitating

This song has all the right energy, and this is another song that will keep your guests longing for the celebration to follow later in the evening. ...You're my sugar boo...

14. Chappell Roan - Giver

This song is great for a modern country vibe.  It has some rock notes to it as well.  If you are looking for something super new to consider and country is your personal vibe you might not need to look any further than this song.  Especially if you are an out of the box type personality.

15.  Taylor Swift - Today Was A Fairytale

This song is perfect for the swifty fan, let's face it Taylor Swift has been an inspiration of dreams and romance for a while now.  This list wouldn't be complete with out a nod to Taylor. Even if you didn't absolutely love her most recent album at first.  Don't sleep on this song to signal to your fellow swifty fans your DJ is likely going to play some of her classic bangers later in the night.

16. Sabrina Carpenter - Espresso

This list wouldn't be complete with out a nod to cutting edge song of 2025.  If your cake cutting moment is right before the DJ is going to open the dance floor.  This could be a great song to elevate the energy in the room.  It will also signal to your guests that you plan on the vibes later in the night to be a modern experience.  😉 something that I excel at as a DJ!

Oh P.S  Since it is earlier the night. Be sure to warn and ensure your DJ play the clean radio edit.  When you listen closely to this song you will notice she drops the F bomb. So something to think about.
